ASAD - 13

Originally posted on rec.music.indian.misc in 1995

This is the 13th article in the series. And as 13 is not a very good number, let me not waste a good Sher today :-). Urdu GHazal has gone through all the ups and downs in the history. But there was a real bad phase once. It was the post-Mir and pre-GHalib era. Delhi was no longer a rich city. Shayari remained prominent in Lakhnow only. And these Lakhnowi Shayars unfortunately concentrated on the physical aspects of women more than enything else. Sometimes it became outright vulgar. :-( :-(

Here is one such example. Mind you, this is included in this Series, just for the sake of completeness, and for NO OTHER reason.

numudaar = obvious/manifest

dupatte ko aage se, duharaa na oDHo,
numudaar cheeze, chhupane se haasil

- Baha'r

Why blame Anand Bakshi for "choli ke pichhe" ? :-(

Anyway, I promise, this won't be repeated.

- Abhay.

ASAD _also_ stands for "A Sher A Day" !
